The ministry's responsibilities across the seven areas above include:

  • Legislation;
  • Policy-making and planning;
  • Organisation and facilities;
  • Research and coordination of the National Laboratory of Public f Health.
  • Providing legal framework on public care professions, medical schools, supervision on preventive and social medicine;
  • Studies related to public health issues, advisory functions, task of monitoring legislation (Specialised Public Health Direction);
  • Rehabilitation services and services for the disabled;
  • Setting legal framework for institutions related to public healthcare;
  • The supervision of public health service provision, and
  • The prevention and fight against drug addiction;
  • Legislation, coordination and hospital planning
  • Issuing authorizations to establish and operate hospital services
  • Subsidy for Hospital Real Estate Projects
  • Oversight of the Hospital Investment Fund


 

Local

Mandatory operations that local authorities are responsible for include:

  • All matters relating to public hygiene and health within their jurisdiction;
  • Participating in the day-to-day management of policies related to public health;
  • Administrative tasks related to policy implementation;
  • Ensuring care for the mentally disabled, and
  • Primary healthcare


 

Local municipalities likewise have the option to oversee management of clinics and hospitals..Theyliaise with the state public health authorities via the Council of National and Communal Public Authorities on Health Issues.
