Luxembourg Culture

Central​

The Ministry of Culture is in charge of:

  • Cultural activities and programmes;
  • International cultural cooperation and external cultural policy;
  • Setting up and running cultural institutions and infrastructure;
  • The coordination of national cultural centres;
  • The protection of the national cultural heritage policy;
  • The administration of funds for national cultural institutions, and
  • The promotion of cultural policy.

 

The Ministry of National Education, Children, and Youth is likewise responsible for promoting the Luxembourgish culture via:

  • the promotion of the Luxembourgish language;
  • Development and coordination of the implementation of the action plan for the promotion of the Luxembourgish language;
  • Organization of activities around Luxembourgish language and heritage;
  • Commissioner for the Luxembourgish language;
  • Management of the Center for the Luxembourg, Permanent Council of the Luxemburgish Language (CCPL).

The Ministry of Mobility and Public works is additionally responsible for the construction and maintenance of public art works as well as overseeing funds for the renovation of the Old Town.


 

Local

Art. 107 of the 1868 Constitution provides the right to local self-government. As such, municipalities are considered as legal entities in charge of their own bodies, heritage and interests.

Mandatory operations tha tlocal authorities are responsible for include:

  • Cooperating with the national level authorities for the policy implementation;

 

In addition, municipalities likewise have the right to conduct optional operations in the areas of:

  • administrative support for cultural institutions (in cooperation with the national ministry), and
  • Music education on a voluntary basis.
