Relations with the EU/Representation at EU level

The members of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) are representatives of the local municipalities. Lithuania appoints nine full members and nine alternates to the CoR. The Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania (the ALAL) selects full members and alternates from the list made by the Regional Development Councils. The final selection must be approved by the Government. The selection takes into account political, geographical, and gender balance criteria.

The representation of the municipalities' interests in Brussels is further ensured via the ALAL, which has its own liaison office.

Lithuania participates in a number of international cooperation programmes. Namely, the Lithuania-Poland Cross-border Cooperation Programme, the Latvia-Lithuania Cross-border Cooperation Programme, the South Baltic Cross-border Cooperation Programme, the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2014-2020, the INTERREG IVC programme, and the EEA and Norway Grants International Cooperation programme (2014 -2020). Moreover, the ALAL is a member of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).
