Central

The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for shaping public policy of the fisheries sector and state regulation of this sector.

The Ministry of the Environment holds the function of protection and control of fish resources.

The Fisheries Board has been established as an advisory body in formulating the fisheries policy and strategy.

The central Government is responsible for:

  • Management of state-owned fisheries;
  • Determination procedures for granting fishing rights;
  • Setting and allocating fishing quotas in Lithuania's internal fisheries;
  • Registration of fishing vessels.


 

Local

On a local level mayors or deputy mayors issue permits to use areas intended for fishing in water bodies, approve plans for measures aimed at the use, restoration and protection of fish stock in water bodies designated for fisheries.
