Immigration and asylum

Central 

The central Government is responsible for:

  • Consideration of and decisions on citizenship issues;
  • Implementation of the state policy in the fields of:
    1. Migration;
    2. Citizenship;
    3. Visas;
    4. Granting asylum and the refugee status.
  • The legal status of foreigners in the Republic of Lithuania is administered by the Migration Department under the Ministry of Interior.

Local

Local authorities are responsible for:

  • Providing social assistance to aliens who have been granted asylum;
  • Cooperating with state institutions and agencies to help them with integrating aliens;
  • Providing the Migration Department with information related to the aliens that is required to discharge its functions when determining the aliens’ legal status in the Republic of Lithuania.
