Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion

 

Central​ level

The Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs is responsible for:

  • Relations with Foreign and Commonwealth Countries ;
  • Relations with the European Union;
  • Relations with International Organisations and Institutions ;
  • Commercial Diplomacy;;
  • Maltese Communities Abroad;
  • EU Internal Coordination;
  • EU Funds and Programmes ;
  • State Aid.

 

The Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Businesses is responsible for:

  • Ensuring stable growth of the economy;
  • Diversification of the economy to secure and enhance local advantages;
  • Promotion of synergies between all the stakeholders involved.

 

The Planning Authority is responsible for:

  • Regulating the development and use of land;
  • Considering applications for development permissions;
  • Monitoring development;
  • Taking action where illegal developments have occurred.


 

Regional level

The Regional Councils are responsible:

  • To provide assistance to local councils within the region to benefit and successfully manage programmes which are funded by the European Union.

 

Local level

The Local Councils are responsible for:

  • Promoting an entrepreneurial policy whereby the interests of shop owners, the needs of the residents and the consumers in the community are taken into account;
  • Encouraging activities which promote trade and facilitate Local Council procedures to decrease bureaucracy so that commercial enterprises can improve the services they deliver;
  • Guidelines for the upkeep, restoration, design or alteration of the facade of any building or of any building normally visible from the street;
  • Recommendations for planning or building schemes;
  • Participating in decisions on the naming or renaming of streets.

COVID-19 measures:

During the COVID-19 pandemic the local councils, together with the Association of Local Councils created the Yousafe Platform. Amongst other tings the platform is intended to energise the business community, NGOs, civil society networks and individuals with regards to initiatives and solutions and provide support.
