Malta Agriculture

Central​ level

The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights (mainly its Agriculture Directorate) is responsible for:

  • Promotion of sustainable agriculture;
  • Developing food export opportunities and making them more competitive on the international arena;
  • Recognising and supporting producers' organisations;
  • Safeguarding excellence in food quality standards;
  • Mitigating impacts climate change can have on agriculture;
  • Providing extensive services and specialised technical advice;
  • Encouraging rural and marketing infrastructural development;
  • Promoting continuous dialogue with food producers;
  • Promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of food production.

 

Other important officially appointed bodies under this Ministry include: Agriculture Consultative Council, which serves mainly as the consultative body; the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), which helps Malta’s farmer to better understand and comply with EU regulations on agriculture; and Traditional Agro-Food Products of Malta, which tackles issues related to requirements of traditional food.
