Malta Fisheries policy

 Central level

The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights (mainly its Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture) is responsible for:

  • Conservation of naturally occurring fish stocks;
  • Issuing fishing licences a​nd fishing authorisations as well as fees collection (Fishing Vessel Register);
  • Regulation, surveillance, and control of fisheries;
  • Development and management of fisheries;
  • Conditions for recording and reporting the quantities of species under the multiannual plan for each fish landing;
  • Duration of closure and conditions governing fisheries in the area of closure;
  • Animal welfare.
