Central


Central government is responsible for:

  • Fisheries policies and implementation;
  • 1 marine protected area, Palm Island;
  • Participation in agreements with Cyprus in Exclusive Economic Zones of each country;
  • Ensuring security parameters (no fishing within 500m of the shoreline and between 6 and 12 nautical miles) are maintained;
  • There are often inter-ministerial disputes due to conflicting legislature and government multiple ministries being responsible for different aspects of fisheries policies (including Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Interior and Council for Development and Reconstruction).

 

Regional

 No competencies identified at the regional level.

 

Local ​


Municipalities have jurisdiction over the coastal areas but the government exercise both administrative and financial control over their activities.
