Central

The central government is responsible for:

  • The development of public policy for transport and overseeing its implementation in coordination and cooperation with the relevant authorities.
  • Development of strategies and action plans
  • The organization of the road freight transport sector and its services and control it and the granting of necessary permits for individuals and companies in all of its activities in coordination and cooperation with the competent authorities.
  • Organizing the transport of goods on the rail sector and services and control as well as issuance of necessary permits for the work in all its activities in coordination and cooperation with the competent authorities
  • Monitor the implementation of standards and measurements and standards adopted in accordance with the legislation in force.
  • Monitor the implementation of bilateral transport agreements between the UK and other countries as well as international conventions to which the Kingdom is a party.
  • Representing the Kingdom at any interested party to transport the Arab and international events and follow-up and coordination and partnership with the competent authorities.
  • Investigations and studies over Transport accidents.
  • Accident prevention measures.
  • Preparation of research necessary to develop the sector and issue periodic bulletins and reports on its activities and studies.
  • The following external bodies:
    o Civil aviation regulator.
    o Aqaba Railway Corporation.
    o Jordan Hijaz Railway Corporation.
    o Department of Meteorology.
    o Land Transport Regulatory Authority.
    o Jordan Maritime Authority.

 

Local

Local government units are responsible for:

  • Planning and urban management,
  • The maintenance of roads;
  • The laying out and maintenance of spaces and public places such as parks and gardens;
  • The organisation of traffic and transport, the paving of car parks;

A draft Transport Law (2016) will soon be implemented and is expected to more clearly define the role of municipalities, affording them greater autonomy and competencies in the Transport sector.
