Slovakia is a land-locked country with no maritime sector. It does however, invest in aquaculture, the maintenance and protection of water, and in recreational fishing. Slovakia has a tradition of farm fishing and recreational fishing, which is supported by the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF). Slovakia has a EUR 15.8 million allocation from the EU, which it has supplemented with up to EUR 5 million from national budget.
Central
The central government is responsible for:
- The overall regulation in accordance with the Common Fisheries Policy.
- Drawing up a national strategy and an operational programme.
- Managing and implementing measures set out by the operational programme of the European Maritime Fisheries Fund.
Regional
The self-governing regions do not have any competences in the field of adoption/implementation of measures pertinent to fishing communities, no to aquaculture sector (agricultural sector) – this is an exclusive competence of the state administration
Local
Municipal authorities can apply via operational managing authority for EMFF to propose and then implement measures pertinent to fishing communities or the aquaculture sector.
