Central 
 

The central government is responsible for providing subsidies and managing policies related to creative arts (architecture, crafts and design, film, literature, music, performing arts) and the institutions related to them. It provides support to:

  • A number of private cultural institutions of a national nature;
  • The national State recognised museums;
  • District theatres and orchestras, the Det Danske Theatre, the Den Jyske Opera; and the drama schools at the theatres in Odense and Arhus;
  • Basic music courses and school concerts;
  • Libraries and programmes supporting libraries and higher education in the areas of art, music, film, theatre and dancing;
  • Copyrights;
  • Broadcasting;
  • Sport;
  • International cultural cooperation, notably with the Nordic Council of Ministers;
  • Network for Children and Culture;
  • Policies for children's culture;
  • Creative and cultural businesses;
  • Cultural cooperation with local authorities;
  • Cultural heritage;
  • Media;
  • Aid to printed and digital media;
  • Observation and promotion of the Danish language. 

Also, it shares the responsibility with the Municipalities of providing subsidies to music schools, local theatres, and local State recognised museums.


 
Responsible ministries/bodies

 
Regional

Regional authorities are responsible for initiating cultural events on a voluntary basis.
 
Since Local Government Reform came into effect between 2007 and 2012, regional theatres, orchestras, museums etc. are now the responsibility of the state.

Some regions support local cultural networks and initiatives.

 
Local
 

Municipal authorities are responsible for:

  • Subsiding local culture, including relics of the past;
  • Running music schools;
  • Subsiding local State recognised museums and a number of cultural tasks;
  • Culture houses and culture centres;
  • Supporting cultural events;
  • Libraries.

Since the local government reform taking effect between 2007 and 2012, responsibilities for cultural institutions, if not acquired by the state, are delegated to the municipal level.The Council of Municipalities (KL) plays a critical role in co-ordination and advisement of cultural policy at the local level.
