Central

The Minister for Justice and Equality oversees:

Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service

  • Implementing the policy in relation to the admission of non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and granting, where appropriate, Irish citizenship;
  • Responsible for International Protection and Asylum procedures.

Garda National Immigration Bureau

  • Border control, registrations, granting permission to remain, deportations and investigations relating to illegal immigration and human trafficking.

Office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner

  • Deals with asylum applications in the first instance;
  • Leads and co-ordinates migrant integration policy across other government departments, agencies and services.

Refugee Appeals Tribunal

  • Decides appeals of those asylum seekers whose applications for refugee status has not been recommended.

Reception and Integration Agency

  • Accommodates asylum seekers while their applications for asylum are processed;
  • Coordinates the provision of services (e.g. health, education, etc.) to asylum seekers;
  • Facilitates the voluntary return home of destitute nationals from certain EU states, and to accommodate suspected victims of human trafficking.
