Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

  • The conservation, preservation, protection and presentation of Ireland's heritage and cultural assets, the Irish language and the Gaeltacht (or Irish-speaking areas), including:
    • Arts, Culture, Film and Music, as well as oversight of Ireland's cultural institutions;
    • Ireland's Built and Natural Heritage;
    • The Irish language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands; and
    • North / South Co-operation insofar as it relates to Waterways Ireland, An Foras Teanga and the wider functions of the Department.
  • Financial support, funding for cultural activities and projects;
  • The external cultural policy;
  • Oversee agencies.

The Arts Council (national agency)

  • Funding, developing and promoting the arts in Ireland.

The Heritage Council (statutory body).

  • Promote interest, education, knowledge and pride in national heritage through research, policy advice and publication.

Údarás na Gaeltachta[1]

  • Funds a range of strategic cultural initiatives;
  • Supports the Irish language through its own practices.

Local

  • Preparing and implementing plans for the development of the arts;
  • Providing financial or other assistance as considered appropriate for the purposes of:
    • Stimulating public interest in the arts;
    • Promoting knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts; or
    • Improving standards in the arts.
  • Implementing their own activities in the policy field of culture;
  • Setting up and running of theatres, cultural centres and libraries; and
  • Implementing cultural initiatives that are directly supported by the EU.
