  • At national level, the body responsible for setting education guidelines is the Ministry of Education and Higher Research.
  • National education remains primarily governed by Order No 76-35 of 16 April 1976[1], supplemented and amended by a number of other texts and principles provided for under the Algerian constitution, including compulsory schooling.

Regional

  • Under national rules and in application of the system of school and training catchment areas, the province ensures the construction of establishments for secondary and technical education and vocational training.
  • It also ensures the maintenance and upkeep of these buildings.
  • Set up, operate and maintain secondary education establishments.

Local

  • Under national standards and the system of school catchment areas, the construction of establishments for basic education comes under the remit of the municipality which must take any steps to promote school transport.
  • It also undertakes any measures to facilitate and promote pre-school education.
  • Set up and maintain basic education establishments.
