Latvia Subsidiarity

The Saeima has set up a European Affairs Committee (EAC) as one of its standing committees to actively participate in Latvian EU affairs. The EAC is empowered to approve any position the national government prepares before it is presented at the EU level. Inversely, the EAC is charged with examining legislative proposals by EU institutions and – where necessary – forwarding them to other committees for their consideration.

The Law on State Administrative Structure includes the principle of subsidiarity among ten main principles of public administration. There is no subsidiarity testing mechanism for national legislation by the Saeima and by the Cabinet of Ministers.
