Youth and Sport

Central

The central government is responsible for:

Youth Policy

  • Policy formulation and the legal framework;
  • International cooperation,
  • Coordinating and stimulating research and know-how related to the youth policy objectives, distribution of grants, and international cooperation (Swedish National Board of Youth).
  • The National Council of Youth Organisations, an umbrella organisation of 83 national youth organisations.
  • Evaluation of 80 indicators of youth development as well as analysis of priority topics (carried out annually).
  • Studies of the youth's attitudes and values (conducted every four years).

Sport policy

  • Policy formulation and legal framework;
  • Support to sport follow-up (Swedish National Centre for Research in Sports and the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences), and
  • International cooperation. 

 

 

Regional

Regional authorities are responsible for:

Youth Policy

  • Matters related to public health and medical care. There is a limited competency of the counties in the youth policy.

Sport policy

  • No responsibilities identified.

 

Local

Municipal authorities are responsible for:

Youth Policy

  • Formulating their own local youth policy (national policy is not binding).

Sport policy

  • Sports clubs for children and students (exist independently of the school system).

Municipal authorities are responsible for:

  • Providing sport facilities.
