Immigration and Asylum

Central

The central government is responsible for:

  • Determining the direction of migration policy (Government and Parliament);
  • International cooperation, and
  • Migration, refugee, asylum, repatriation and citizenship issues (responsibility of a governmental agency, the Swedish Migration Board).

 

Regional

Regional authorities are responsible for:

  • Negotiations on the reception of people in need of protection and other aliens.
  • Oversight and resource allocation within migrant integration schemes.

Regional authorities work closely with the Public Employment Service to deliver vocational training and migrant integration programmes at the regional level.

Additionally, the Swedish Association of Local and Regional Authorities (the SALAR) plays a critical role in advising and helping co-ordinate actions involving migrants at the regional level.


 

Local

Municipal authorities are responsible for:

  • The reception of asylum seekers, housing migrants, and the planning of housing.

Municipalities work closely with the Public Employment Service to deliver vocational training and migrant integration programmes.

Additionally, the Swedish Association of Local and Regional Authorities (the SALAR) plays a critical role in advising municipalities on migrant reception and programmes.
