Regional level

The Azores:

  • The arrangement of the use of tourism resources;
  • Training of human resources in tourism;
  • Legal regimes of tourist and travel agencies and operators, including their licensing, classification and operation;
  • The use of tourist sites, monuments and attractions;
  • Sea activities, and
  • Investments in tourism. 

Madeira:

  • Tourism and hospitality;
  • Handicraft and folklore, and
  • Exploration of the public utility property of the region.

Responsible ministries/bodies

  • Five Regional Tourism Bodies (ERTs) (reduced in 2013 from 11)
  • Regional Authorities of Azores and Madeira

 

Local level

Municipalities are responsible for:

  • Creating tourist institutions and participating in the promotion of the local tourism;
  • Participating in regional tourism bodies;
  • Participating in the definition of tourism policies which relate to the municipality;
  • Promoting and supporting the development of craft activities and ethnographic expositions of local interest,
  • The licensing and inspection of tourist facilities and hotels.

Intermunicipal entities are responsible for:

  • Same areas, under agreement with the municipalities
