Central Government

The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and  Industry has the overall responsibility of Energy in Cyprus and specifically for:

Planning and realizing policies in the field of energy;
Rationally exploiting domestic energy resources;
Ensuring the best possible exploitation of hydrocarbons;
Creating international partnerships and supporting investments in the field of hydrocarbon exploitation.
Cooperating with all competent authorities for the creation of a legal framework on the research and exploitation of hydrocarbons;
Monitoring the private entities that are exploiting the Cypriot hydrocarbon resources;
Helping the domestic working force to develop capabilities that can be used in the field of hydrocarbon exploitation;
Drafting a national policy on electricity, including mitigating electricity costs, supporting Cypriot electricity companies and creating an electricity market that abides by the necessary environmental and climate standards;
Regulating the quality of petroleum products;
Monitoring and coordinating the supply and availability of sufficient energy capacity for domestic needs;
Monitoring and participating in the formation of European policy for energy issues;
Suggesting ways for the implementation of the European Acquis, assisting in the preparation of laws, regulations and rules etc. and implementing programmes for their promotion;
Preparing and implementing programmes for energy conservation.
The promotion of renewable energy sources (RES) and the developement of technologies for the utilisation of RES;
Improving the energy performance of  buildings;
Assisting the government in the formation of the national energy policy in coordination with all other bodies involved.

District authorities are responsible for the administration and coordination of central government policies in the field of energy at the district level.

 
Local Government

Municipalities and communities have no competencies in this area.
