Central
Fisheries is a fully devolved area within the UK. Applications for the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) can be submitted via central government online. However, the UK will only continue to receive EU funds until 31 December 2020.
Regional
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) only works directly in England.
Wales
The Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs has oversight of fisheries in Wales and the following:
- policy
- licensing
- marine planning, conservation and biodiversity
- marine and fisheries strategy
- management of fishery harbours.
Scotland
Scotland is among the largest sea fishing nations in Europe, and hauls around two thirds of total fish caught in the UK. Marine Scotland manages quotas for fish stocks and all inshore fisheries, as well as science and research. Marine Scotland works closely with central government for EU initiatives and funding opportunities.
Northern Ireland
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs is responsible for protecting fish stocks and overseeing fisheries.
Local
While policy, licensing and strategy are the responsibility of devolved governments, local authorities have administrative functions.
