Kosovo Culture

Central

  • Designing and implementing policies in the field of cultural heritage, performing arts, music, virtual arts and libraries;
  • Supporting, directing and coordinating and monitoring the implementation of cultural and artistic projects;
  • Promotion, and
  • International cooperation
  • The management of the Kosovo Institute for the Protection of Monuments; Archaeological Institute and the Museum of Kosovo as well as six regional centres for cultural heritage
  • Monitoring the work of the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage[1] (an advisory body to the Assembly of Kosovo) in approving the List of Cultural Heritage, identifying priority measures for financial support for cultural heritage protection and evaluating cultural heritage-related project proposals.
  • Administering the State Archives through the Agency of State Archives


Local

Local authorities are responsible for:

  • The licensing of local cultural services and facilities,
  • Reporting to the regional institutes for the protection of monuments and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports on cultural heritage preservation and
  • Cultural and leisure activities.

Municipalities with Serb majority have competence in cultural affairs, including:

  • The protection and promotion of Serbian and other religious and cultural heritage within their territory, and
  • Support to local religious communities.

 

Responsible ministries/bodies

  • The Department of Cultural Heritage within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports is responsible for the management of cultural heritage in Kosovo.
  • The Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Local Government Administration and the Ministry of Communities and Return also have a certain relevance concerning the protection of cultural heritage
  • Municipalities
  • Municipalities with Serb majority have an extended competency
