The central government is responsible for:

  • Inland fisheries;
  • Marine Fisheries
  • National Steering Committee for Aquaculture publishes national goals and publishes an annual public call for scientific programmes.
  • Monitoring and management of freshwater aquaculture;
  • Most fish farms are organised within the Fish Growers Union (FGU), though lately the FGU has specialised in technical training and insurance;
  • Licensing for commercial fishing and national vessels;
  • Research and development.
