The Ministry of Industries and Innovation (which includes the previous Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture) is responsible for:

  • Fisheries Management in the Icelandic Exclusive Economic Zone;
  • Issuing fishing quotas to the fishing fleet;
  • Research, conservation and utilisation of fish stocks, other living marine resources of the ocean and the seabed and management of areas where these resources can be harvested through the Marine
  • Research Institute of Iceland;
  • Control of conservation and utilisation of fish stocks, other living marine resources of the ocean and the seabed and management of areas where these resources can be harvested;
  • Research and control of production and import of fisheries products;
  • Mariculture of marine species;
  • Supporting the research, development and innovation in the fisheries sector; and

International cooperation. e.g. participation in the work of NEAFC and NAFO.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is an Icelandic Government institution . The Directorate is responsible for implementing government policy on fisheries management and handling of seafood products. The Directorate enforces laws and regulations regarding fisheries management, monitoring of fishing activities and imposition of penalties for illegal catches.
