Iceland Civil protection

Central 

The Department of Public Security and Criminal Justice within the Ministry of the Interior is responsible for:

  • Implementing the law on Civil protection;
  • Policy for civil protection and security;
  • Issuing regulations on civil protection alert levels;
  • Preparing response plans;
  • Temporary service centres;
  • Security; and
  • Police.

Local

Municipal authorities are responsible for:

  • Fire protection;
  • Civil protection committees which formulate civil protection policy and arrange civil protection activities within the Municipality;
  • Examining the disaster survival capacity;
  • Preparing response plans; and
  • Temporary service centres.
