Environment and fight against climate change
Central Government
The central government is responsible for:
- 40 Sites of Community Interest (SCI) and 30 Special Protected Areas (SPA).
- The formulation and implementation of overall policy and legislation in the field of environment and the fight against climate change;
- Promoting through an integrated system of coordination, the protection and sustainable management of the environment and of natural resources.
- the sustainable management of agricultural, livestock and fisheries production.
- Protecting and enhancing the environment
- Ensuring sustainable development and improving the quality of life.
- Combat the loss of biodiversity.
- Overseeing and adopting European policies;
- Promoting environmental awareness and information.
- Ecolabelling;
- Overseeing genetically Modified Organisms;
- Regulating noise levels;
- Controlling ozone depleting substances;
- For limiting waste, and pollution.
- Reducing the environmental impact of development projects and projects
- The implementation of management plans and actions for protected areas NATURA 2000 network aiming at the effective protection of the Network.
- Promoting the licensing of all facilities that have waste water in order to protect both soil and water resources in Cyprus.
- Create an integrated network of waste management installations promoting a separation system at source.

Province Level
District authorities are responsible for:
- The administration and coordination of central government policies in the field of environment at the district level.
- Ensuring the protection of Community Interest Sites, and Special Protected Areas in their areas of responsibility.
Local SAA
Municipalities are responsible for:
- The maintenance and operation of water supply systems, and
- The construction and maintenance of drain systems and the operation of sewer systems.
- The protection of the municipality's natural environment.
- The cultivation of trees
Communities are responsible for:
- The maintenance and operation of water supply systems, and
- The construction and maintenance of drain systems and the operation of sewer systems.
- The protection of the community's natural environment
- The cultivation of trees.
