Celebrating the 25 anniversary of INTERREG, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) organise jointly with the European Commission and the Congress of Local and Regional Powers of the Council of Europe a conference on the future of cross-border cooperation in Europe.
The cross-border cooperation and the programme INTERREG are success stories and fundamental cornerstones of the European integration.
The conference on 13th November will tackle the future of cross-border cooperation (CBC) in general, not only with regard to EU programmes, but also other aspects.
The added value of CBC for border regions and for Europe, its contribution to cross-border territorial integration, new opportunities for growth and jobs, a better cooperation with neighbouring States and between third countries, and a better use of new chances (energy, health care, public services, education, modern communication media, etc.) need to be further elaborated, as well as the elimination of existing obstacles.
The conference will be preceded on 12 November by a seminar on the state-of-the-art of the participation of the European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation (EGTCs) in programmes of European Territorial Cooperation, identifying their main achievements, the bottlenecks, and the future steps to improve their performance.
Different tasks forces of the AEBR will meet on 12 November, prior to the conference, and the AEBR will celebrate its annual assembly.
